The first sort conductor of the BBC Philharmonic and Netherlands Stereo Orchestra has died at 85.
Sir Edward Johnson Downes, CBE and his wife Joan, who was crictally ill, traveled to Switzerland in which, according to a statement released with the conductor’s family, they “died in harmony, and under circumstances of their very own choosing.”
The preparations were made though the Europe assisted suicide group Dignitas.
As opposed to his wife, Sir Downes wasn’t terminally ill, but his child described him as “almost sightless and increasingly deaf.”
Friends of the conductor said that they will weren’t surprised by his actions. According to BBC Philharmonic general manager Richard Wigley, “Ted has been completely rational, so I can nicely imagine him saying, ‘It’s recently been great, so let’s end our everyday life together.’”
Downes had also served as associate audio director of the Royal Chrome and as music director of the Australian Opera. He was knighted in 1991.
Assisted suicide is legitimate in Switzerland, but not in great britan. The deaths are being looked into by Greenwich CID. In the cases associated with 115 other British residents who have traveled to Europe to die in a similar manner, absolutely no friends or family members who followed or collaborated with them have been prosecuted. However, some United kingdom officials have expressed issue over the fact that Downes was not himself terminally ill.
